A Palette Rooted in Iceland: Second Edition Now Arriving

The story of this palette begins far from the studio—with a handful of earth collected from the Icelandic landscape.

In 2012, pigment maker David Kremer traveled to Iceland, where he encountered a terrain unlike any other. Volcanic reds, muted greens, icy whites—each element seemed to speak its own color language. Among lava fields and glacial valleys, promising earths were gathered and brought back to Germany. There, in Kremer Pigmente’s traditional mill, they were slowly transformed into pure artist pigments.

Years later, in collaboration with our team at Myndlistarvöruverslunin Artsupplies.is, these pigments became the foundation for a watercolor palette that captured the spirit of Iceland in color.

Now, we are proud to introduce the second edition of this palette: a refined, thoughtfully expanded set of hues made for artists drawn to nature, place, and material honesty.

A Palette Made with Earth

At the heart of this collection are three pigments made from Icelandic soil itself:

  • Brimisvellir Green – a soft olive tone from sediment-rich land near a glacier river.

  • Heydalsvegur Yellow – a muted, mineral yellow evoking the coastal lowlands.

  • Snæfellsjökull Red – an earthy iron-rich red, inspired by the volcanic slopes of the west.

These are not imitations of landscape—they are made from the land, ground and bound by hand.

Expanded for Depth and Light

To complement these earth tones, we selected additional colors that speak to the Icelandic environment and light:

  • Ultramarine Red – reminiscent of summer lupines in bloom.

  • Kobalt Bottle Green – a deep green echoing the moss-covered lava fields.

  • Thulite – a soft pink mineral pigment sourced from Norway.

  • Kremer White – a delicate, opaque white inspired by Iceland’s snowlight.

  • Magnetite – a granulating black pigment, symbolic of oxidized iron and volcanic stone.

Together, these nine colors form a palette that’s versatile, atmospheric, and deeply rooted in its origin.

Made for Explorers

The set is housed in a compact, elegant metal box — designed to travel well, yet beautiful enough to keep on your desk. Whether you're painting on a windswept coast, sketching in a Reykjavík café, or simply seeking new hues in your studio, this palette is your companion.

Each pigment is artist-grade, lightfast, and handcrafted in small batches in Germany. As always, we prioritize material quality, environmental respect, and artistic purpose.

Thoughtfully Packaged in Reykjavík

The packaging for this edition is as considered as the colors themselves. Each box is produced locally in Iceland by Reykjavík Letterpress, using a traditional artisan letterpress method. The result is tactile, timeless, and beautifully understated. Printed on sustainable materials with great care, the packaging reflects our commitment to both craft and environmental responsibility—turning each palette into a keepsake.

The second edition of our Icelandic watercolor palette will be available for pre-sale from 19th of June - we can’t wait to share it with you.
